To find offline games for Android, don't rely on the word "offline" on a Google Play listing alone: install the game, switch to airplane mode and play a full level. That is the only reliable test. Zertyzzle, Djoox Studio's crystal-merge puzzle game, is available on Android and plays offline: its 120 levels need neither Wi-Fi nor mobile data.
What to look at on Google Play
A game's listing gives a few clues before you install:
- The description: look for phrases such as "playable without a connection" or "offline mode". A description that talks only about multiplayer, leaderboards or live events points to a game that needs a network.
- The "Data safety" section: a game that collects little data and doesn't mention a mandatory account is often more self-contained.
- Recent reviews: search the reviews for "offline" or "no internet". Players say quickly if a game stalls without a network.
- In-app purchases: they happen online. An offline game can still sell things, but the purchase waits for the connection to return.
Check the size and your free storage first
An offline game keeps everything on the phone, so it takes room. Look at the download size on the listing, then open your phone's storage settings (the menu name varies by brand) to see how much space is free. Once installed, a game can take more than the download figure, and it grows with updates.
If space is tight, remove what you no longer use rather than installing on the edge: an almost-full phone can fail to update apps or save progress.
The airplane-mode test on Android
- Install the game with a connection and launch it once so its data can load.
- Turn on airplane mode from the quick settings panel, then reopen the game.
- Play a complete level, up to the reward.
- Close the game from the recent apps list and relaunch it: your progress should be there.
If the game asks you to sign in again to continue, it is not really offline. Our general guide to offline mobile games explains what separates a genuinely offline game from one that is only offline in name.
Games that only look offline
Some games open without a network yet stop being playable a few minutes later. Three patterns come up most often:
- A login wall: the game asks you to sign in or create an account before the first level, or again after each launch. A game that really works offline lets you start straight away.
- An ad wall: every few moves the game waits for a video to load, and with no network it simply stalls. A game built for offline play doesn't need the connection to keep going.
- A licence or content check: the game verifies something online at launch and refuses to start, or loads its levels one by one from a server.
The airplane-mode test catches all three, as long as you play past the first screen and relaunch the game once.
Keeping your progress safe
Progress can live in two places: on the phone, or in an online account. A save kept only on the phone survives airplane mode and restarts, but it does not follow you to a new phone. An online save does, but it needs a connection to update.
In Zertyzzle, you can start without an account and your progress is kept on the phone. If you want it on another device, the online save, which needs internet, is the way to go.
Zertyzzle on Android: what works without a network
Zertyzzle is free and available on Google Play. Offline, you keep:
- the 120 levels of the adventure, across 12 nebulae;
- Zen mode, with no move limit and no objective;
- your progress, kept on the phone, with no mandatory account.
Friend duels, teams, the weekly Rift, leaderboards, the shop and online saving need internet; a score waiting to be sent goes out when the connection returns. The details are on our offline puzzle game page and in the guide to the game modes.
Update before you go offline
Updates arrive through Google Play, so they need a connection. Before a trip, open the Play Store's list of apps with pending updates and update the games you plan to play, on Wi-Fi if you can. Then open each one once to confirm it still starts. Our page on games that don't use data covers this in more detail, and the page on offline games for a plane has a pre-flight checklist.
Free, but with ads
Zertyzzle is free and funded by advertising, but no ad interrupts a level. Some are offered in exchange for a bonus, and you choose whether to watch. The Club Zertyzzle subscription removes forced ads.
Frequently asked questions
How do I play an Android game without a connection?
Install the game with a network, open it once, then switch on airplane mode. If the level starts and finishes, the game works offline.
Does an offline Android game use mobile data?
A game that plays without a network doesn't use data while you play. It may use some when downloading and when syncing as the connection returns.
Can Zertyzzle really be played without Wi-Fi?
Yes: the levels play without Wi-Fi or mobile data. Only the modes involving other players, the shop and online saving need internet.
Will I lose my progress if I change phones?
A save kept only on the phone does not move by itself. In Zertyzzle, the online save, which needs internet, is what lets you restore progress on another device.
Where can I download Zertyzzle on Android?
On Google Play, from the Zertyzzle page. The iPhone version is coming soon.
