Looking for free tower defense games to play on your phone? The core idea never changes: waves of enemies march down a path, and you place defenders so that none of them get through. But that simple rule has grown into a whole family of variants, with heroes, with a kingdom to build, against other players, or alongside an alliance. This guide walks you through them so you can find the one that suits you, using Astrakeep, Djoox Studio's hero tower defense game, coming soon to Android, as an example.
Tower defense in a nutshell
A tower defense game is a contest between a path and the spots beside it. Enemies arrive in waves and head for your base; you decide which defenders to deploy, where to put them, and when to fire their special powers. The fun is in the planning: a well-built defense holds on its own, while a careless one crumbles by the third wave. Losing shows you exactly where the gap was, and you come back with a better plan.
The genre fits phones remarkably well. A level takes a few minutes, you play with one finger, and it rewards thinking more than reflexes. Our page on tower defense games on mobile covers what makes a good one on a small screen.
The main flavors of tower defense
Hero tower defense
In the classic version you build nameless towers. In tower defense games with heroes, your defenders are characters with a name, a role and a special attack, and they grow stronger as you fight. You get attached to them and build your lineup with care. Our guide to tower defense games with heroes explains how this changes the game.
The genre's big names
Plenty of players first discovered tower defense through the Kingdom Rush series by Ironhide Game Studio, and go looking for more in the same spirit. Our page on games like Kingdom Rush gives an honest look at what Astrakeep shares with it and what it does differently.
Castle defense
Holding the walls of a fortress against an assault is the most intuitive form of the genre, and often the first one people try. Read our page on castle defense games for mobile to see what to expect.
Fantasy strategy
Dragons, mages, golems, haunted necropolises: most tower defense games draw on fantasy, which gives every enemy a recognizable silhouette and behavior. Our page on fantasy strategy games on mobile looks at what makes these worlds so engaging.
When tower defense meets base building and multiplayer
Building a kingdom between battles
Many games add a management layer: the loot you win in battle goes into growing a base, which in turn makes your defenders stronger. If that loop is what hooks you, see our page on kingdom building games for mobile, as well as our look at games like Clash of Clans, Supercell's well-known game about building, defending and raiding villages.
Taking on other players
Tower defense can also become a contest between real people: you attack another player's base, and your own defense has to hold while you're away. We explain how that works in our guide to tower defense PvP on mobile.
Playing with an alliance
Helping each other, chatting, chasing shared goals: an alliance turns a solo game into a team effort. Find out what you get from strategy games with alliances.
Free, but on what terms?
Nearly every tower defense game on mobile is free to install. The real question is what the in-app purchases do. Before you commit, check whether you can pay for random draws, whether money buys power or just time, and how much room ads take up. We go through those questions, and Astrakeep's answers, on our page about mobile strategy games without paid loot boxes.
Astrakeep, Djoox Studio's hero tower defense game
Astrakeep takes place in the Kingdom of Astra, a realm of floating islands threatened by creatures of shadow. It brings together several of the variants above:
- A hero tower defense campaign: you place your heroes on platforms along the path, they attack on their own, and you trigger their special attack once it's charged. The campaign has 18 chapters of 5 levels each, 90 levels in all, and every chapter ends with a boss.
- Seven heroes across three rarities (Rare, Epic, Legendary), from Lyra the Archer to Sylvara the Empress. They level up to 40 and earn up to 5 stars.
- A kingdom to build: 4 islands and 10 buildings, from the Crystal Tower to the Summoning Altar. Battle loot (wood, stone, mana) pays for construction, which keeps going even when the game is closed.
- Raids on five rival villages and on other players' kingdoms, with four troop types trained in the Barracks.
- Alliances for helping each other with construction and chatting, with built-in message translation. Territories to conquer, alliance wars and alliance bosses are planned in the game.
Astrakeep is free to play with optional in-app purchases, and it's translated into 8 languages. The game spells out its own rule on spending: gems never buy summons. To learn the ropes before launch, open the Astrakeep guide.

Frequently asked questions
What is a tower defense game?
It's a strategy game in which enemies advance in waves along a path. You place defenders, towers or heroes, in the right spots to stop them before they reach your base. Most of the thinking happens before the wave arrives: what to place, and where.
Which free tower defense game should I pick on mobile?
Start with what you enjoy: heroes to level up, a castle to defend, a kingdom to build, battles against other players, or playing with an alliance. Then look at what the in-app purchases actually get you. Astrakeep combines heroes, base building, raids and alliances in one game.
Is Astrakeep free?
Yes. Astrakeep is free to play with optional in-app purchases. The game says everything in its shop is sold at a listed price with no paid random draws, and gems never buy summons: Epic heroes are summoned with tokens you earn by playing.
When can I play Astrakeep?
Astrakeep is coming soon to Android. The download buttons on the game's page will go live as soon as it's out on Google Play.
