The best tower defense games on mobile are easy to control with one finger, split into short battles, and keep moving forward while your phone is in your pocket. The core is the same as anywhere else: stop waves of enemies marching down a path by placing your defenders in the right spots. Astrakeep, Djoox Studio's hero tower defense game, was built around that: wave-based battles, heroes that attack on their own, and a kingdom that keeps growing while you're away. It's coming soon to Android.
Why tower defense works so well on a phone
Tower defense is one of the strategy genres that translates best to a small screen. There's no aiming and no split-second reactions: the important decisions happen before the wave, when you choose who to place and where. One tap puts a defender down, another fires a special power. It fits neatly into a coffee break or a bus ride.
The genre also gives you a progression you can read at a glance. Every lost level teaches you something: a stretch of path left uncovered, an enemy that was too fast, a boss you should have slowed down. You come back with a better setup, and the win feels earned. What to look for in a mobile tower defense game
Simple tap controls
On a phone, every action should take a single tap. In Astrakeep, you tap a platform to place a hero there. Your heroes then attack on their own, and when a special attack is charged, you tap it at the bottom of the screen. That's all you need to know to play the first level.
Battles split into levels and waves
Astrakeep's battles play out in waves, with a counter showing your progress and a warning when the final wave arrives. An Auto mode is available during battles, which comes in handy when you replay a level you've already mastered. The campaign has 90 levels, split into 18 chapters of 5 levels, and each chapter ends with a boss.
Progress that continues without you
Mobile games get played in small bursts throughout the day. In Astrakeep, construction in your kingdom keeps going even when the game is closed, and your islands keep producing wood, stone and mana. When you come back, a summary tells you what happened while you were away. Your heroes also defend your kingdom if a rival attacks while you're offline.
Notifications that respect your nights
If you allow them, Astrakeep sends a short reminder when a construction, your troops or an expedition is finished. The game makes a point of never sending them between 10 p.m. and 8 a.m.
A save you won't lose
You start with a guest account. To keep your progress if you switch phones, you can link an email address or a Google account, and your game is then saved to the cloud.
What Astrakeep offers beyond the campaign
Astrakeep is a hero tower defense game: your defenders aren't towers but seven heroes with different roles, from Lyra the Archer and her rapid fire to Nyx the Sorceress and her frost. Our page on tower defense games with heroes explains what that changes in how you play.
Between battles, your loot goes into growing the Kingdom of Astra: 4 floating islands and 10 buildings that make your heroes stronger. You can also train troops to raid rival villages and other players' kingdoms, and join an alliance. Free, with optional purchases
Astrakeep is free to play with optional in-app purchases. The game lays out its own rules: everything is sold at a listed price with no paid random draws, and gems never buy summons. Ads come as optional videos you choose to watch for a bonus, such as doubling a level's loot. We go into what money can and can't get you on our page about mobile strategy games without paid loot boxes.
Frequently asked questions
What's the best tower defense game on mobile?
There's no single answer; it depends on what you enjoy. If you like heroes to level up, a kingdom to build and playing with an alliance, Astrakeep brings all of that together in one game. If you'd rather have a purely solo experience, look for a long, varied campaign.
Can I play Astrakeep offline?
Astrakeep isn't designed as an offline game. Attacks between players, alliances and chat all run through the game's server. That said, your kingdom keeps producing and your construction keeps going while you're not playing.
Which platform is Astrakeep coming to?
Astrakeep is coming soon to Android. The download buttons on the game's page will go live as soon as it's out on Google Play.
Do I need a lot of time to play?
No. The campaign is played level by level, and Auto mode lets you replay levels you've already beaten. Construction and production move forward without you, so you can play in short sessions throughout the day.
