Tower defense games with heroes swap nameless towers for characters: each one has a name, a role, a special attack, and grows stronger from battle to battle. You're not just building a defense anymore, you're putting together a team. That's the idea behind Astrakeep, Djoox Studio's hero tower defense game: seven heroes to place on platforms along the path, level up and power up with stars. It's coming soon to Android.
What heroes bring to tower defense
In a classic tower defense game, one archer tower is much like another: you pick a type, upgrade it, repeat. Heroes add three things.
- Personality: every hero has a fighting style. Some hit fast, some damage a whole area, others slow enemies down.
- A moment to seize: on top of their automatic attacks, heroes have a special attack that charges up during battle. Firing it at the right time can rescue a wave that's going badly.
- Long-term progression: your heroes stay with you from level to level, and the time you spend powering them up shows in every fight.
The result is a game where your lineup matters as much as your placement. To see how this variant fits alongside the others, check out our guide to free tower defense games.
Astrakeep's seven heroes
Astrakeep has seven playable heroes, split across three rarities.
Rare heroes, available from the start
- Lyra the Archer: rapid fire. Her special attack is called Arrow Rain.
- Orin the Mage: area damage, with his Arcane Meteor. Orin is also the advisor who welcomes you to the Kingdom of Astra.
- Kael the Knight: a heavy hitter in melee. He blocks enemies on the ground, and his special attack is Guardian's Shock.
Epic heroes, to summon
- Nyx the Sorceress: a frost specialist, with Blizzard.
- Tharok the Bombardier: a dwarf who lobs bombs from very far away, right up to his Bomb Barrage.
Legendary heroes
- Aurelion the Paladin: spears of light and Celestial Judgment.
- Sylvara the Empress: dragonfire and Imperial Breath.
With its mages, knights and dragons, Astrakeep is a true fantasy strategy game for mobile.
Placing your heroes: the heart of the strategy
In the campaign, enemies follow the path and you tap a platform to place a hero on it. You start with 6 platforms, then get a 7th and an 8th by upgrading the Barracks in your kingdom. The rule is simple: don't let a single enemy through.
Placement matters as much as power. Kael, who blocks ground enemies, holds attackers in place while your ranged heroes do the damage; Orin's area damage pays off where enemies bunch up. When a level won't budge, the game tells you as much: upgrade your heroes or change their placement, then try again. Every fifth level of the 90-level campaign is a boss with its own powers, which pushes you to rethink your formation.
Powering up your heroes
Levels and stars
Heroes level up with your resources, all the way to level 40. Their maximum level also depends on your Crystal Tower, the heart of your kingdom. Shards give them stars, up to 5, and each star makes them 12% stronger.
Summoning Epic heroes
Nyx and Tharok are summoned at the Summoning Altar using tokens. You earn tokens by playing: the daily chest, the 7th day of your login streak, an expedition to the Sky Ruins, or one optional video a day. The game shows its odds and guarantees an Epic card within 10 summons at most. Gems, the premium currency, never buy summons.
Getting a Legendary hero
Aurelion and Sylvara can't be summoned. You can buy them in the shop, or earn them with 40 legendary fragments: you get one fragment every day you open the daily chest.
Your kingdom works for your heroes
Three buildings power up your heroes directly: the Rune Forge raises their damage, the Barracks their health, and the Arcane Academy charges their special attacks faster. That's what ties battles to kingdom building. And since construction keeps going while the game is closed, your heroes get stronger between sessions too, one of the hallmarks of good tower defense games on mobile.
You'll find everything about each hero, stars and summoning in our Astrakeep heroes guide.
Heroes that defend without you
Your heroes aren't just for the campaign. In the defense formation screen, you choose where they stand when a rival attacks your kingdom, even if you're offline. Against other players, only your 3 best heroes defend.
