Relaxing puzzle games: a Zen mode with no move limit and no goals

Relaxing puzzle games should let you breathe: no ticking clock, no pressure, simple gestures and the quiet pleasure of watching pieces fall into place. Zertyzzle offers exactly that with its Zen mode, which has no move limit and no goals, alongside short levels you can play at your own pace, even offline. It's free and coming soon to Android and iPhone.

What makes a puzzle game truly relaxing

What you want on the couch at the end of the day isn't what you want in a tense competition. A calming puzzle game mostly comes down to:

  • a simple, satisfying gesture you can repeat without effort;
  • no pressure: no timer, no "game over" lurking around every move;
  • a soft look and sound;
  • a game that doesn't nag you with notifications or interruptions.

Zen mode: play without counting

The Zen mode in Zertyzzle, the crystal merge puzzle game, is made for those moments:

  • no move limit: play for as long as you like;
  • no goals: nothing you have to create, nothing to fail;
  • you stop when you decide, by opening the pause menu and tapping "End the game".

All that's left is the gesture itself: slide a row, line up three identical crystals and watch them merge into a brighter one, from Shard to Gem to Jewel. Zen mode keeps a best score for anyone who likes to beat their own record, with zero obligation. The other modes are covered in the Zertyzzle game modes guide.

A simple move, a satisfying merge

The whole game rests on three rules. You slide an entire row or column, and the crystal pushed off one edge comes back on the other. Three identical crystals in a line merge into a single, stronger one. Three Jewels form a Zertyon, which clears its whole row and column. When new crystals drop in and merge on their own, a chain reaction kicks off by itself, and that's often the most soothing moment of all.

And if no moves are left, the game reshuffles the board for you, so you never get stuck.

Levels at your own pace

Want a little more structure without the stress? The 120 map levels, spread across 12 nebulae, are played by moves, not against the clock: take as long as you need to think before each slide. Each nebula has its own look and music. And if you don't like a move, the Undo booster puts the board back the way it was.

On the audio side, you can adjust sounds, music and vibration separately. Two extra music moods, Lo-fi and Synthwave, are available in the shop.

A game that doesn't rush you

  • Ads never interrupt a level. The game is free to play and supported by ads; some ads are offered in exchange for a bonus, only if you want them, and the optional Zertyzzle Club subscription removes forced ads. More on our page about a puzzle game with no forced ads.
  • The daily reminder is optional and never pushy: accept it or not, and switch it off in settings anytime.
  • Short sessions: a level takes a few minutes, perfect for a break.
  • Levels work offline, on a plane or anywhere without signal. See our page on offline puzzle games.

More ways to unwind

Beyond the levels, Zertyzzle has some low-key extras: build and decorate three little planets with your stardust, complete an album of 45 illustrated cards, grow your companion animal, or change the look of your crystals and backdrop. None of it is mandatory.
